Transformer Testing
Verify the Transformer Before It Reaches Your Product
Testing is an essential part of high-frequency transformer manufacturing.
The objective is not simply to determine whether a transformer passes or fails.
Testing provides a controlled way to verify that the manufactured transformer conforms to the approved electrical and mechanical requirements.
Electrical Testing
Depending on the product specification, testing may include:
Turns Ratio
Verifies the relationship between primary and secondary windings.
Inductance
Confirms the specified inductance of the winding under the defined test conditions.
DCR
Measures winding resistance and helps identify winding or termination problems.
No-Load Current
Useful for identifying abnormal magnetic behavior or excessive losses.
Dielectric Withstand
Verifies insulation strength between electrically separated windings or conductive parts.
Insulation Resistance
Measures insulation resistance under specified test conditions.
Functional & Load Testing
For applicable transformer designs, testing can also include operation under representative electrical load.
Parameters may include:
- Input voltage
- Output voltage
- Load current
- Frequency
- Switching conditions
- Temperature
This helps verify transformer behavior within the intended power conversion system.
Thermal Testing
Temperature testing can be performed under defined operating conditions to evaluate:
- Winding temperature
- Core temperature
- Surface temperature
- Temperature rise
Thermal validation is particularly important for compact, high-power-density transformers.
Test Data & Traceability
For OEM projects, testing requirements can be defined according to the customer’s approved specification.
Depending on the project, production records may include:
- Test results
- Lot identification
- Inspection records
- Approved sample reference
- Production date / batch information
This provides a clear link between the finished transformer and its manufacturing requirements.
Testing Should Follow the Design
The correct test plan depends on:
Transformer Topology + Electrical Specification + Insulation Requirement + Application
Not every transformer requires the same test sequence.
HY MFG works with customers to define the appropriate validation and production test requirements.
